2008 Ultimate Tournaments Countdown!
The biggest Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 tournament showdowns of the year are fast approaching! In just under 3 weeks, the final contenders for Warhammer Fantasy Battle will do battle at the Ultimates, with their 40K counterparts to duke it out the following weekend. It's the contest the whole year has been building towards!
Final Contenders & Wildcards announced!
With the final qualifying event results for 2008 now released, we've now been able to hand out the remaining invites (via qualifying countbacks) to both Ultimate tournaments! All of the new additions to the competition have been added to the Warhammer contenders and Warhammer 40,000 contenders pages, so go check it out.
Anyone who recently attended the "Donkey Con" Tournaments in late October will have heard our announcments regarding the first 2 WildCard entries for Ultimate Warhammer and Ultimate Warhammer 40,000. For those that missed it, these were Shane Warnock (Angel_Langwyn) for 40K, and Kris Petty (krispy) for Warhammer. Congratulations to them both for two very well deserved entries to the event.
Furthermore, with all of the results in we are now able to announce the final two WildCard entrants! Congratulations to Simon Addicott (Gambit) for 40K, and Michael Kurgan (Lord Blackblood) for Warhammer who have been nominated by the WA hobby community and voted in by the judges to gain the final exclusive Wildcard invitations to the events this year. You can check out full details of their selection and other event news on the Ultimate Tournaments website.
Seeding Lists Updated!
Many of you are probably aware that this year on the site we've been tracking the overall results of everyone who has attended WA tournaments in 2008, primarily for the purposes of determining the seeding positions for the players in the 2008 Ultimates, but also for the general tournament gaming community of the state to track how they've done over the course of the year.
With the results for the final events now in, we have compiled the final seeding list for 2008! Overall 88 people played in 40K events during the year, and 54 in tournaments for Warhammer Fantasy. The hobby is strong in WA indeed! If you are one of those people, head on over and see how you did against the competition. And get ready for 2009!
You can find the final Warhammer & Warhammer 40,000 seeding rankings for 2008 here.
World's End Radio At The Ultimates!
In addition to their judging duties, Luke & JJ from World's End Radio will be recording live a special "Ultimates" episode of the show! Recording will be taking place intermittently during both of the tournaments as comments from players, spectators and commentary from the hosts themselves are captured. It should be a blast!
Additional Event Information
All contenders should be aware that army lists are due by no later than 15th November for Warhammer and 22nd November for 40K. Late lists will receive penalties (ZERO points for the "Ultimate Hobby" category) - so get it in early and don't take the chance! There are several other important bits of news for players and spectators alike that everyone should be aware of. Please ensure that you read the following threads below:
- Ultimate Warhammer details
- Ultimate 40K details
- Tournament rules queries
- Ultimate Warhammer Grand Prize notice
And don't forget to check out the:
- Ultimate Tournament website
Also remember that unlike last year, the events are open to spectators on both days, and we encourage everone to come down and have a look as well as to stick around for the awards ceremonies and after event festivities with the Ultimates crew and players. On the Sunday night of each tournament we'll be holding an afterparty at the pub (exact venue TBA), and everyone (players, spectators and all Westgamers 18 years +) is invited to attend! Come on down for a few drinks, chat hobby with the players and find out how everyone went. It's should be a great weekend followed by a great night!
Over the coming weeks there will be loads of event coverage on the Ultimates, including results, photos, interviews, reports, and more. Watch this space!

For the 5th year running on the Queen's Birthday long weekend in September, the last couple of days once again saw the event of the Outpost 6030 Skulls Warhammer Fantasy Tournament! There was a bumper turnout of 29 players this year, and everyone had a great time in a fantastic gaming environment - with the sun shining brightly on a beautiful couple of warm days of battling!
A thread has just been posted for all of the competitors reports & event feedback which you can add to here.
And here are the winners!
Best Overall:
1st place - Daniel Scragg (Bretonnians)
2nd place - Luke Retallack (Vampire Counts)
3rd place - Aaron Thompson (High Elves)
Best General:
1st place - Luke Retallack (Vampire Counts)
Best Sportsman:
1st place - Neil Formosa
Best Army: (Painting)
1st place - John Dick (Bretonnians)
The "Unlucky Monkey":
JJ Layfield (Orcs & Goblins)
For the first time this year, no new invites were handed out to the winners for qualifying for the 2008 WestGamer Ultimate Warhammer Tournament - due to the fact that the top place getters were either a an Ultimates Judge, or had already qualified! This is actually very good news for those close to the top at a number of events as it means that we'll have a few new contenders when we work out the countbacks. Also, all players at the event will have added to their scores on the Ultimate 2008 seeding ladder, so look out for an update on that shortly.
Congratulations to Adrian Scott (Rathnard) for being the man behind the helm of the tourney this year (and to his parter Rosalie who managed to secure a GREAT venue for it!), and to the team of Outpost 6030 helpers including: Matt & Chrys Benson-Parry, Dan Mattner, Dave MArshall, Pete Hartree & James Higgins. Well done one and all!
The next event coming up in 2 weeks is the "Donkeycon" Tournament (Warhammer, 40K, LOTR & Blood Bowl) - which is also the FINAL 2008 qualfiers for the 2008 Ultimate Warhammer and Ultimate 40K tournaments. See you there!

Well, despite a ceiling collapse due to horrendous weather earlier in the year, the show must go on - and it certainly did this weekend at the NWS "Gauntlet" Warhammer Tournament! As always it was a very tight contest, with most of the top player group finishing without much room to spare when a calm settled on the battlefields and tally of victory was counted. Well done to everyone who came along and to those who endured!
A thread has just been posted for all of the competitors reports & event feedback which you can add to here.
On to the winners!
Best Overall:
1st place - Stan Veneros (High Elves)
2nd place - Aaron Thompson (High Elves)
3rd place - Chris Spielvogel (Vampire Counts)
Best General:
1st place - Joel Bonini (Dark Elves)
Best Sportsman:
1st place - Nathan "Ratt" Gall (Ogre Kingdoms)
Best Army:
1st place - Tom Holtby (Vampire Counts)
Best Painted and Player's Choice:
Adam Simpson (Daemons of Chaos - Khorne)
A big well done again also to Stan Veneros and Chris Spielvogel, who have just secured themselves invites to the 2008 WestGamer Ultimate Warhammer Tournament! (Despite his 2nd place finish, Aaron Thompson has already qualified due to winning the event last year, though improves on his seeding rank) Look out for an update with the new contenders added shortly.
Congratulations to Mike Ward (waterloo) for putting the tourney together once again (through much drama this year we should add!) and for Andrew "Frank" Sinclair (Vargr) for his assistance throughout the weekend. I'll see you at the next Ultimates Warhammer qualifier in 2 weeks - the Outpost 6030 Skulls Warhammer Tournament!

UPDATES!
Ultimate Tournament - 2008 Players Guides Released!
With tickets due to go on sale for qualifiers shortly, the 2008 player's guides for the WestGamer Ultimate Tournaments have just been released! Each pack contains full details on the events, as well as army selection guidelines, scoring systems and important scheduling information. You can download the packs from the WestGamer files area here - and a colour printed version will also be posted to all competitors along with the all important bonus event CD upon ticket payment.
In addition to this, we have also released the 2008 Ultimate Tournament designer's notes. In this article, we overview how the event has evolved from last year, detail the important changes, as well as the strategy and thought processes that went into them. Anyone interested in the Ultimates (or in Tournaments in general) should take the time to have a read, as it may provide some useful insight into the development of the Ultimate Tournaments and some thoughts on hobby tournaments in general.
New Ultimate Event Q&A and Rules FAQ Threads
In line with keeping everyone as informed and as up to date as possible, 2 new threads have been created for Ultimate Tournament questions and feedback:
- The 2008 Ultimate Tournament Event Q&A thread, for any queries relating to the event format or structure as a whole, and;
- The 2008 Ultimates Rules Queries thread, for players to post any general rules queries that are not already covered by official GW FAQ's for consideration by the Ultimates Judges.
New Ultimates Judge
Speaking of Ultimates Judges, it happens that we have a slight change to the line-up this year! Unfortunately Drew "Reaper" Lovell had had to step aside from his appointment on the 2008 Judging panel due to unavoidable outside commitments requiring his attention. We thank Drew for his involvement to date, and wish him all the best whilst we continue to move ahead with the event.
In his place, we have Ben ""bolo"" Waters stepping in to sit on the judging panel! Ben is a Tournament veteran of many years and is well known by much of the WA gaming community from his time with Games Workshop, as well as in his Forum Moderator's role here as a member of the WestGamer team. We're thrilled to have Ben on board, and it's now all hands back on deck again moving forward!
Ultimate 2008 Qualifying Event Schedule
The Ultimate 2008 qualifying event schedule has also just seen an update, so check the event schedule page for all the latest on which events to attend to have a crack at breaking in to the Ultimates! There are still a number of events coming up further into the year where you can have your shot.
Next up for aspiring contenders are the Gauntlet Warhammer tournament (this weekend!), the Skulls Warhammer tournament and the new "Donkey Con" Warhammer & Warhammer 40,000 events! All of these tournaments are your next (and final!) qualifiers for Ultimate 40K 2008 and Ultimate Warhammer 2008 respectively, so make sure you get those armies ready and grab some tickets! See you there!

Poll of the Month
Well, the new Warhammer Dark Elves have been out for a little while now, and all reports seem to indicate that the book has gone a way to redress the issue of Elven "balance" in the Warhammer World once more. This prompts the thought though - is every army as even handed? Do you find it harder to face some forces than others, or is it all down to the player behind it?
So which Warhammer army is your "kryptonite"? What do you have the most trouble playing against? Have your say in the September Poll of the Month thread!

The End... is here!!
World's End Radio launches!
World's End Radio is a brand new hobby podcast hosted by none other than myself (Luke Retallack) and Aenur (JJ Layfield), and will cover interesting and informative topics relating to the Games Workshop hobby universe (and a few other worlds as well!).
For those new to the wonderful world of podcasts, a podcast is basically like "internet radio". Shows you can download and listen to at your own leisure. There are some very entertaining hobby podcasts out there, but we are extremely proud to be stepping into the mix with our very own WA show!
New episodes of World's End Radio will be released around twice per month, so make sure you stop by the new website to check out the latest episode as well as news on the show and broader hobby scene. We'd love to hear your feedback on each episode, which you can send to us at mail@worldsendradio.com or alternatively leave us a voicemail via Skype at worlds.end.radio (We will be looking to play some listener feedback on future episodes, so any voicemail feedback would be particularly great!)
So, hop on over to the new web blog at: www.worldsendradio.com and check it out. We hope you enjoy the show!

Poll of the Month
Professionally painted armies are becoming increasingly common with each passing year in the tournament scene, and have proven to be a useful way for some people to get an army that they might otherwise never have done completed so that they can actually play at events.
But what about those people who are put off by the fact that whilst they have put huge amounts of hours into getting an army done while someone else has taken the easy route? Or perhaps despite the imbalance of effort required by each group to prepare for the tourney, that overall if this gets more people playing at tournaments and trying new things out - then it must be good for the hobby... Or is it?
Considering this, are you for or against (or somewhere in between!) people using professionally painted armies at tournaments? State your opinion in the August Poll of the Month thread!
