I understand you need people to be vanillas but for me 3 games and no powers. That makes me feel a bit miffed :(
Dude, weren't you mafia twice? That's rarer than having powers and gives you more to do.
This +1

Being Mafia I would expect you would take a greater interest in the game... you are not just a townie awaiting your fate, you are part of a team that is working together to stay a step ahead of the other players....

Meh - tomato tomato - personally being a mafia I think wasn't all its cracked up to be. And to be honest having nothing to do other than lie your rear end off while entertaining got really tedious after a while.

It was just disappointing that after the end of the second game I thought cool - I have been town and mafia now I get something different. And just get "Joe Blogs - Vanilla" again was a real kick in the teeth which was one of the reasons why I really couldn't be bothered playing in the last game.

personally i think being a mafia member is one of the best roles (haven't done it yet though), found being the cop dunno frustrating (still fun) lol, big target on your back, having to work out who is what. Give me lies and deception any day lol. I mean being a doctor is almost the same as just being a townie. Being serial killer would be awesome though

Neil, I'm being well intentioned when I say this, and please don't take this as me having a go.

One thing that needs to remembered, is that when a player is part of a team (town or mafia or whatever), by giving up part way through - that player does impact the other people in the game. This was especially evident in the last game (the one that's still going) and I really do think it has contributed to the overall result, which is unfortunate.

I get the frustration - but please keep in mind the potential frustration caused to other players as well.

Neil, I suspect perhaps you simply don't enjoy playing mafia

Being with the mafia is far more interesting than perhaps any other role. You get to talk amongst your little group whenever you want, plot and scheme to your hearts desire. You get to lie, hoodwink and deceive the other players while quietly chuckling to yourself. It is extremely challenging and while lying is certainly essential if you're with the mafia, knowing the right kind of lie to tell is very difficult.

If you can't enjoy that then maybe the game simply isn't for you, which is fine, different people enjoy different things.

I loved being with the Mafia in the first game. In the following games I've felt very alone and vulnerable lol.

I enjoy the game overall. That's fine. What I do also enjoy is a bit of variety. Getting basically the same role 3 times in a role is, as I said before, really quite crappy. I don't know how you allocate roles or attributes to people. Maybe I was just really unlucky. Regardless some variety would have been nice on my own personal part.

Once again, getting "Joe Blogs - Vanilla" 3 times in a row, regardless of whether it is town or Mafia is really quite disheartening at the end of the day and really saps your energy to continue playing.

Maybe take this on board. As I said I don't know how you allocate roles but maybe this is something to keep in mind for those that have been playing the last 3+ games or so.

And for this I apologies. I should have maybe done something totally different other than just quit. But I was (A) Upset with the game, (B) I have been feeling unwell the last couple of weeks and haven't had much energy to put forward to it and (C) Going on and off shift was making it difficult as well.

SO for any slight caused to the current game, SORRY!

I'm sorry Neil but I'm not going to make any apologies for my role allocation. I cannot predictably rotate who get's powers because then it becomes too easy to metagame. This is why I made you mafia two out of three times, because other players might not have expected that.

I don't really think language such as "really quite crappy", "variety would have been nice", "quite disheartening", "really tedious after a while", "makes me feel a bit miffed" etc is particularly kind to me and I don't think it's at all courteous to have gotten "upset with the game".

Well as I said before, its up to you to take it how you take it. Obviously you are upset that someone has decided to criticize the game that you have run.

All I was doing was trying to be honest with how I felt the game was being done in relation to myself and I honestly felt a bit hard done by by the roles I had been given after 3 games in a row, as I have expressed in the above posts.

What would you rather I say? "Good show old chap however I felt a little upset that I had the same role 3 times?" By the sounds of it you were going to get upset and defensive regardless of how I would have said it. I thought I was being quite tame in the comments that I have posted and as I said I have been nothing but completely honest. Now to take it as a personnel attack on you or your abilities to run the game? Fine. Whatever. This is the last time I will try to be honest and attempt to try and show some criticism in relation to how a game is being run that I am a participant in.

Image

Enjoy the rest of your mafia games guys. You will have one less participant to worry about.

I'm sorry you feel that way Neil, especially because you have drastically misinterpreted my comments. I have no problem with criticisms of my games or of myself, I have certainly never even approached anything like being "upset" over something so trivial and have acted defensive insofar as every person will naturally defend themselves under criticism.

Perhaps I am my misinterpreting your comments but it seems that you perhaps have viewed my comments as a personal attack, which is unfortunate. I have merely tried to state that I believe your severe criticism to be fairly unreasonable as you have not in fact been given bland roles (quite the opposite) and even if you had I could understand your disappointment but not condone how you handled it (dropping out and complaining harshly).

I do not wish to get intro a protracted debate and am trying to remain as constructive as possible. I have no ill feelings toward you and encourage you to play in future games.

Heya,

I'm going to show tentative interest for the next game :) Looks awesome and I think I can manage to log on once a day every day (spending lots of time online would be the biggest obstacle for me though).

I can definitely handle a Star Wars theme, with LOTR second and Simpsons third.
