I wish I knew about this earlier, though my bank account is better for me not knowing till now :)

Roberts Space Industries

Star Citizen looks like it will be an awesome game, being developed by Chris Roberts (Wing Commander etc) exclusively for the PC and it now has over 27 Million Dollars in backing

I've already spent way too much on a game that doesn't exist yet, though there are some backers who have paid in excess of $20000.00.

But then Wing Commander was the game that made me switch from the Amiga 500 to a 286 PC way back in 1990. From memory that PC cost me the equivalent of 4 weeks wages and then I still had to buy an 8bit SoundBlaster audio card for $500.00 to get sound out of the game.

I remember staying up all Christmas eve trying to get the game running, bloody dos and memory emulators.

My first 4 PC upgrades were also a result of the release of the different versions of Wing Commander or Freelancer, so I guess I have a history of spending too much to play a game.

Is anyone else a backer?

I can't really remember the specs, but everthing was in kilobytes with the occasional megabyte.

Still it was a step up from the Amiga 500 with 40 meg external hdd. Or my first computer TRS80 Colour Computer 16k of memory and a cassette recorder for storage

Yup, I'm a backer.

I played Wing Commander 1 (and Secret Missions), 2, 3 and 4 so I was all over this kickstarter like a cold at a kindergarten.

I have a Constellation, a Hornet and an M50 waiting for me when this things finally goes live. The community engagement from day 1 has just been brilliant and the amount of money they are raising is just insane (we are currently chasing the $28 MILLION stretch goal ffs). They have been savants in how they are marketing this and making people spend more and more money.

The only risk is that fact that they are shooting for the stars with this game (nearly literally...) and they may be building up peoples expectations a just a little too high. BUT, if they get anywhere close to what they have promised then boy oh boy, this will be one special game.

Unfortunately I missed the Kickstarter, as I have been avoiding getting sucked into backing all those cool modular terrain ideas etc.

A friend told me about it a few months ago, but I thought it was just an MMO and I already have enough difficulty remaining in the real world and didn't want to get into the online game. Plus I like to plod around trading and exploring and was waiting for X Rebirth!

However I had a chance on Sunday to read through the site and got hooked. I started out as a Rear Admiral on Sunday morning and was a Vice Admiral by Tuesday morning (Pledging and Subscribing) 8)

I don't really care if they don't push the boundaries on graphics, but I do want a decent plot driven single player campaign and the ability to explore a universe either my own (private server) or the Persistent Universe. Game play either dogfighting and capital ship engagement and the acquisition of shiny things will make me happy.

There is quite the community out there for a game that isn't even in Alpha yet. Lots of loose organisations of pirates or Mercs, Cargo Haulers or private forces (like LAMP, Rogue Squadron or the Browncoats).

The group I am part of is structured around 3 of the large Idris(sp?) corvettes, with breakdowns via geo location so we can run flight groups around the clock if we wish (and if the demand for services - escorts etc) are there. Kinda over organised for something no one can play yet, but there are a lot of excited engaged people. Me, I just try not to avoid spending any more money... at least until the Constellation upgrades come out :(

Its unfortunate you came in just a bit too late and missed out on the Lifetime Insurance deals the earlier backers got.

Look forward to flying out in the black with you someday.

Yes it sucks to not have been on it from the beginning.

Though I believe that it is still possible to get LTI by gifting to an original backer who can access LTI till 26/11/2013 and get it gifted back.

Sources?

Because if that is true, I'm reasonable willing to try it.

I'm sending my 315P and Hornet 7C next!

Talk about buying your commission, I now have (all with LTI);
  • Constellation
    Hornet F7C
    Freelancer
    Cutlass
    Origin 315p
    Aurora MR
And a "shut up and take my money skin" (it seemed appropriate) :)
Next week some of the "limited" edition ships are being made available on certain days. Could be an expensive week. I would like a Starfarer, Caterpillar and a Retaliator.

I couldn't persuade my wife of the merits of a Star Marshal pledge, but I might be able to be cunning enough to wear down her opposition to buying an Idris on 26/11/2013 maybe. Assuming they are up for sale.

Me and a mate backed this 6 months ago. A couple of other friends have also been convinced to back so we have a nice little gang going.

My mate and I both backed at the level that gets the big carrier ship thing. I can't remember what it's called as it was a while ago. Looking forward to the game and luckily have other games to pass the time so it doesn't feel like forever waiting for it to come out.

I don't understand why people are buying so many ships? Are you really going to be able to fly them all?

And what if this game tanks? I'd hate to have spent thousands of dollars on a game that doesn't deliver.

I'll just stick with my basic hornet for now.
