Just for comparison, here's the list I used to run (that we talked about yesterday):
Quote:
  • BIG ASSAULT SWARM [400] 4 Tyranid Warrior, 8 Termagant, 8 Hormaguant
BIG ASSAULT SWARM [430] 4 Tyranid Warrior, 14 Termagant, 4 Hormaguant
BIG ASSAULT SWARM [400] 4 Tyranid Warrior, 4 Termagant, 12 Hormaguant
    DOMINATRIX SWARM [500] 1 Dominatrix
    GENESTEALER SWARM [150] 6 Genestealer
    GENESTEALER SWARM [150] 6 Genestealer
    LICTOR SWARM [200] 4 Lictor
    LICTOR SWARM [200] 4 Lictor
SUBTERRANEAN SWARM [285] 1 Trygon and 2 Raveners, Ravener
SUBTERRANEAN SWARM [285] 1 Trygon and 2 Raveners, Ravener
Alpha strike all the teleporters (into cover if possible) right in the opponents face first turn and garrison the Genestealers as close to the halfway line as possible. Be unrelenting in the pressure. The Dominatrix is just there to keep the swarms Marching in the early game and then lend some punch if it's still alive later.

Thats pretty well the type of list I would run as well and probably will when I get around to building a Nid list one day...

This is a good point. It's worth making any change, no matter how minor, to ensure only one formation is the Break the Spirit.

what are multiple bts? I understand why a dominatrix is good for the reroll but with no war machines and few tanks i expected that would make enemy warmachine killers less effective.

i had considered changing to have some long range template throwers ie

NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [260]
2 Tyranid Warrior, 5 Termagant, 3 Hormaguant, Zoanthrope

NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [260]
2 Tyranid Warrior, 5 Termagant, 3 Hormaguant, Zoanthrope

NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [225]
2 Tyranid Warrior, 5 Termagant, 3 Hormaguant

NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [225]
2 Tyranid Warrior, 5 Termagant, 3 Hormaguant

NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [225]
2 Tyranid Warrior, 6 Termagant, 2 Hormaguant

BIG ASSAULT SWARM [500]
3 Tyranid Warrior, 13 Termagant, 4 Hormaguant, Hive Tyrant, Zoanthrope

GENESTEALER SWARM [150]
6 Genestealer

GENESTEALER SWARM [150]
6 Genestealer

GENESTEALER SWARM [150]
6 Genestealer

SUBTERRANEAN SWARM [250]
1 Trygon and 2 Raveners

LICTOR SWARM [200]
4 Lictor

BRUTE SWARM [400]
1 Hive Tyrant, 3 Exocrines, 4 Dactylis

i like it steve, and its the kind of list that i would like to take. however it doesnt seem to have much shooting or FF. After being stung once by Matts skimmers i am wary of making that same mistake again. Do CC focused armies do ok in tourneys?

i have faced that Onyx's Nids list with Marines and Squats - sure i had way more shooting but if u follow his advise by hitting with the teleports in the first turn then rush across the table u can overwhelm opponents and they just dont have enough units to deal with the tide of angry bugs coming at them...

I certainly don't want to tell you my list is best.
I believe it was Matt that put me onto this build tactic after he gave the list a quick look over.
The Termagants have 5+ fire fight and there are a lot of them.
This coupled with outnumbering by more than 2:1 and often having a blast marker advantage (as well as the whole dead gaunts don't cause blast markers thing) means that engagements against skimmers can be won.
Try to get the Big Swarms into supporting fire positions of engagements is also a help. You will simply roll more dice than any other army in the game (except maybe Krieg).

I would recommend you try a few different lists and find what suits your play style best. Matt's tournament is a great way to cram some games in quickly :)

This may not be best, as Steve says, but it's a really good place to start.
