So I am currently on a week long gaming retreat in Margaret River and thought I would share the game experiences and general fun and frivolity.

First a little background.

Aenur and myself have been playing games with a regular group for the best part of 10+ years now. It started out in uni as a regular weekly DnD session, playing through several campaigns before we were introduced to the wonderful world of eurogames.

Our board game collection rapidly grew, as did our group. Over the years people have joined our group (Malignant) and left our group, due to moving over east or changing jobs or basic life events.

Anyway, about 9 months ago we had the pipe dream of everyone catching up again and coming back to Perth and going somewhere for a week to just play games. Much conversation via email followed and an awesome property in Margaret River was discovered.

Quick shout out to La Plage in Margaret River. I can't post the link but google it. It's worth it.

Anyway, 9 months of planning and conversation have finally come to fruition with the week finally here.

We ended up with 11 people. Malignant was keen but ended up only being able to go to PAX. Aenur and his brother came back from over east and joined us.

Day 1

Day 1 started with a morning breakfast on the Rockingham foreshore, followed by a leisurely 2 hour drive to Dunsborough for our lunch stop. Then another 45ish minutes and we found our house for the next week.

The house is great. We were expecting a bit more isolation, but in retrospect it is probably better. The view is amazing with full glass walls along the main living/gaming area, giving awesome panoramic views whilst gaming or typing on your laptop. With expected storms over the next few days, we are anticipating awesome views to come!

Once we settled in and had a celebratory drink, a few of the boys decided to go and throw the frisbee ring around. Chatting to a local they directed us to a nearby park, so we set off to explore the nearby area.

We eventually found the park which was on top of a hill, with an awesome view of the nearby ocean and surrounds. We ended up throwing frisbee as the sun set. Life was pretty great.

Frisbee by sunset.
Returning to the house we sorted out dinner and cracked out a game of 9 player UNO to kick off the night.

Dinner was eaten and games were cracked out.

Half the group got stuck into some 6 player munchkin (with all expansions) with a treasure dungeon first up leading to some very geared up heroes. Aary ended up winning this grueling 4 hour game by stacked decking a germ off someone who was about to win and killing it to win the game.

While this was going the remaining players cracked out a 4 player game of zombiecide.

First game saw a quick and easy win to the survivors, leaving enough time for a second game.

Game 2 was much closer, playing the "Zombie Police" scenario. This scenario sees the survivors Nick, El Cholo, Wanda and Doug attempting to get to a bunker, needing to collect certain objectives before opening certain doors to get into the bunker.

The game started well with two chainsaws located early, leaving 2 of the characters culling the zombie population whilst the other 2 set off to try and get the first objective to access the first door. Doug and Wanda were able to clear the building the objective was in, allowing Wanda to help out El Cholo and Nick while Doug went and got the first objective.

This left Doug isolated and dangerously close to going to Orange level, however Doug had found twin sub machine guns so was pretty happy.

The other 3 characters cracked the first door, finding an abomonation in the building!

This left the group trying to clear the room, grab the second objective to unlock the bunker and dodge the abomination. Meanwhile, Doug kept his head down in the opposite building, waiting for his time to move.

The 3 characters managed to keep avoiding the abomination, with Nick's tough keeping the group alive. However, they couldn't get enough distance away from the abomination without dying horribly to nearby zombie hordes. Worse still the group had got to the orange danger level, so the zombie horde was just increasing.

Doug finally decided to make his move, making a break for the nearby police car. Unfortunately the zombies had other ideas...
Image
Doug in trouble.
Luckily Doug managed to get in the car before the zombie horde destroyed him, enabling him to drive and pick up the 3 survivors as the zombie horde closed in. The survivors then drove around to the bunker, dodging fatties and abominations while they chainsawed, macheted and sub machine gunned out of the car to clear the way to get to the goal.

By the end of the game all players were in red, making it the first 4 player game I've played where we have got to red and won. We managed not to take a wound (thanks to the goalie mask and Nick's tough) but there were a few turns were zombies taking an extra turn would have wrecked us in one swoop. Probably my favourite game of zombiecide to date.

The only downside of Zombiecide is I got an email on Tuesday saying "Wave 2 of zombiecide season 1 is in the mail to you" which would be the extra 6 or 7 survivors of season 1. Unfortunately this meant it wouldn't make it in time for the holiday. Doh.

So now I type this on the morning of day 2. We have plans of not JUST gaming the whole time (until it storms at least) but still will no doubt play many games today.

The group is already into their second game of Fluxx, a card game which starts out with 1 basic rule "draw 1 card, play 1 card" but gradually has more rules added as people play down cards.

Make sure you check out games exchange at some point in Margs, which is in that little area where chicken treat is, I'm sure they'd love for you guys to play some games there so that some of the locals can see.
Also a bit of shameless self advertising, if you get a chance, head on over to Lake Cave and go to the tearooms there for a coffee, which my parents own and run. They may even get a chance to sit down and play munchkin and poo with you, which they have played before :)

Pretty bummed I couldn't make this - but as things turned out the whole moving house thing I've got going on would have made it an impossibility anyway. :P

Have a great time guys!

Check out la plage Matt. It's perfect for it. It was like 3k for the week but between 10+ people it makes it quite affordable.

Luke you are sorely missed. We think of you every time we drink wine and have fun :)

Sounds like it was a blast! I'd love to build up a Northern Chapter of WABA but all the clubs up north seem to die out. Seems everyone prefers crashing each others garages :)

Thanks, good tip. I had been thinking an EPIC retreat on Rottness (it travels so well), but La Plage sounds fancy. 300 bucks a head for a week? Bargain.

Day 2

Day 2 games started early with some morning Fluxx as people woke up and waited for others to get up and ready so we could go and make the most of the nice weather before the impending storm (apparently).

Fluxx turned out to be a really entertaining little quick game. It is a simple game for 2 to 6 players. Each player starts with 3 cards and 1 rule, draw a card then play a card. As the game progresses people get actions, rule cards, goal cards and keeper cards. The aim of the game is to have the keeper cards in front of you that are shown in the goal cards. During their turn people can play down rule cards which add to the first rule. This can let people draw more cards, play more cards etc etc. People are also able to play down goal cards. There can only be one goal card in play at once so can quickly change.

As such the game can escalate quickly when multiple rules are in play. But quite enjoyable for a filler game.

Most of the day was taken up with wineries and shopping etc, then eating dinner and watching game of thrones, so didn't leave much time for playing games.

Managed to play guilds of Cadwallon finally, a recent kickstarter that arrived.

We jumped straight into a 7 player 5x5 game, where rival players vie for control of various district cards that are set out in a 5 by 5 square. Players do this by placing their agent pieces in the boulevards between 2 districts, with each agent challenging for the 2 districts. Each district is one of 8 different guilds, worth between 1 and 3 victory points and contributing between 1 and 3 support value. There are also action cards which can be gained and personalities that don't earn points but can add to the final score by adding cards to any of the guilds, scoring more points. There are also militia around which dock you points at the end of the game if you are stuck with them.

the game is relatively simple to learn the rules for, but gets quite complex in it's tactics and strategies, with the action cards often messing up the best laid plans.

After dinner and game of thrones half of us played some rush and crush, an interesting little racing game where you can blow each other up as well. Very enjoyable. The race was fast and frantic between 6 of us with 1 driver smashing into a wall and 3 of the remaining 5 drivers on 1 structure point at the end of the race.

Meanwhile the other half of the group played a card game called guillotine (where the aim is to change the order of who is going to get executed (or something) followed by some evil baby orphanage, another kickstarter game that has proven to be quite enjoyable.

Evil baby orphanage is another quick little card game where the aim is to collect evil babys through time and rehabilitate them. Each baby doesn't necessarily want to be rehabilitated and if left unsupervised can get up to any manner of mischief, ranging from good mischief such as forcing babies in other players orphanages to move to someone elses, to bad mischief where they bite one of your babies forcing them to leave your orphanage. Luckily evil babies are easy to distract with toys, though other players can make your babies do their bad stuff, or just lure them away with cookies.

Day 3 shapes up to be more excursions in the morning before the storm sets in, then solid games for the rest of the week. should be fun!

Day 3

Day 3 saw us on a few more excursions, though not before a couple more games of the morning favourite Fluxx.

One of the games we managed to win the game without playing down any rule cards, a feat which I'm sure is quite difficult.

We ended up spending most of the day out and about again, returning about 4pm, just as the rain started to hit.

We decided to crack out the game of thrones just before dinner started. Unfortunately it had been a while since anyone played so we had to go over the rules which ended up taking almost an hour!

Still, we soldiered on and got into the game. unfortunately a few players had a better idea of what they were doing then others and Aenur and the greyjoys dominated. It ended up being a close run game, with both of the northern armies and southern armies being allied for most of the game, pounding the unfortunate lannisters and barratheons in the middle into near submissions. The Barratheons were valiant in defence, holding the iron throne, the feifdom sword and kings landing up until the final turn. Unfortunately the combined efforts of 3 players cost them first the sword (curse that Martel card that moves you down the influence ladder) then the defence token on kings landing, and finally kings landing itself. The greyjoys managed to win the game with a backdoor attack on Winterfell followed by a strike at Casterly rock. The Starks were unlucky not to be able to take back winterfell, and if they had played their cards a bit differently then they would have pulled it off and possibly almost won the game.
Image
Winter is coming.
We ended up finishing the game at 10:00pm, leaving some of the group exhausted. Definately not for the faint hearted, though if we played again it would be much quicker.

We followed this up with a quick game of poo. Its another filler card game where you are a monkey and the aim is to throw as much poo on other monkeys as you can without getting hit with poo yourself. Theres no real way to explain it, but it is a lot of fun.

After that we decided to go a bit more traditional and cracked out some pictionary followed by Uno attack.

Day 4 has started with the storm settling in (and an amazing view of it) and the promise of nothing but games for the day. Should be awesome.

Sounds like a blast. I have a friend who wants to get Game of Thrones on the table. I'd be interested to see how it plays out. Not sure if it has enough action to keep this group interested though.

The last few turns can get quite intense. But it is a lot more political And alliance making and resource management then just hack and slash. Very tactical game. I think they have captured the feel of the game of thrones series really well, where there is a constant vying for power, push for land, you can't overextend and keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Plus the constant threat of willing attack.
