All the different versions of D&D have something to offer.

4th edition is great if you have lots of tactical players who love the intricate mini skirmish game that this edition devolves to. It is ok at low levels but gets insane at high levels unless your players level up with their characters, lots of out of turn action sequences that can slow the game down. Characters are hard to kill in this edition. If you are railroading it can work. Aside from a one off I would not want to run this again as encounter balance is very tricky.

3.5/Pathfinder is ok but there is huge bloat in the feat system and requires a lot from your players in terms of system mastery. I enjoy playing it but the system gets in the way more often than not.

1st/2nd is good but quirky, some bits need to be junked (weapons speed factors still elude me).

B/X is my preferred. Quick combats, lots of story and no rules bloat. Characters take as little as five minutes to generate for newbies and even less for vets. I currently run this with a bunch of simple house modifications (just 3 saving throws and wisdom attribute is junked as well as a skill and encumbrance system from the Lamentations of the Flame Princess game. In 7 sessions the current party has 3 Level 2s, 3 Level 1s and two retainers. You can download a new pdf as WOTC has opened up their catalogue online or use the Lamentations one which is a modern take and free.

If you need a city guide/aid I cannot recommend Vornheim highly enough.

I think the Rules Cyclopedia is a 90s? version of the original Basic, Expert, Companion etc series in one book. The art is kind of lame in the book itself.

B/X was Moldvay and Cook's efforts and came before the Mentzer Red Box, I have both they are similar but Moldvay assumes you are an adult. I think Wotc is selling a cleaned up pdf of this through dndclassics.com all the classic modules are there too.

Lamentations is a modern retroclone of B/X with a weird vibe check out the author Raggi's site http://lotfp.blogspot.com.au/
he has his Grindhouse pdf with no art that can be downloaded for free.
