Yeah multiplayer was not good in 5 for a while (would even die in a LAN game!) but they eventually sorted it out. Multiplayer is the only way we play (though it sometimes strains the marriage depending on who fires the first nuke lol!)

My download finishes in 2 minutes.

This will probably be my last post on Westgamer. It's been a pleasure and a privilege to get to know you all, I wish you nothing but the best in all your future endeavours.

365 turns in to the game! How did that happen?
I'd tell you what I think of it, but I just need one more turn first.

I played a few turns last night and then - BAM. It was 3am.

Definitely keen to get some multiplayer going at some point.

Anyone know if it's possible to "Avoid Growth" in your cities? Was available in Civ 5, but I can't find it here...

I've been waiting a long time for a game like this. The burning question, though, is how it compares to it's spiritual predecessor and the best game ever made: Alpha Centauri?

Tricky - I think our expectations have been raised by the recent Civs, so while this game is far superior to Alpha Centauri, it's also really easy to criticise it on a couple of things it doesn't do as well.

To get them out of the way, IMHO the main thing it doesn't do as well as Alpha Centauri is the leader personality traits- there was such a huge difference between Gaian Stepdaugters and Morgan Industries for example in the original, and factions in the new game are much more blurred by dozens of smaller options and choices and technologies. You could take a faction like American Reclaimation and have them hug trees or cut them all down to light the ecology's funeral pyre :D
Second, the original had more of a story, and the new game is more a traditional 4X scramble. It tries to be high sci-fi, but isn't really.

Those are my criticisms, and the only other I've seen on a review site was claiming that the game was influenced by everything from Dune to 2001 but had too much 40K in it, with units that look like Orks vs Necrons and elites that look like Space Marines with flags and plasma pistol commanders. I don't think that's a problem for most westgamers :D

So those are the bad parts.

Everything else is better than Alpha Centurii.

It's good. Not as good as pirates. Maybe nothing is as good as Pirates :D

I don't know whether the sci-fi setting will stand the test of time as well as the historical games have (there's just something more special evocative about graduating from Bronze to Iron weapons that you don't get from futuretank1 to futuretank2, or by sacking Rome that you don't get by taking UtopiaCity).
I am 3 days into my first multiplayer co-op, and the game still gets you wanting just one more turn :D
