I've been waiting a long time for a game like this. The burning question, though, is how it compares to it's spiritual predecessor and the best game ever made: Alpha Centauri?
Tricky - I think our expectations have been raised by the recent Civs, so while this game is far superior to Alpha Centauri, it's also really easy to criticise it on a couple of things it doesn't do as well.
To get them out of the way, IMHO the main thing it doesn't do as well as Alpha Centauri is the leader personality traits- there was such a huge difference between Gaian Stepdaugters and Morgan Industries for example in the original, and factions in the new game are much more blurred by dozens of smaller options and choices and technologies. You could take a faction like American Reclaimation and have them hug trees or cut them all down to light the ecology's funeral pyre
Second, the original had more of a story, and the new game is more a traditional 4X scramble. It tries to be high sci-fi, but isn't really.
Those are my criticisms, and the only other I've seen on a review site was claiming that the game was influenced by everything from Dune to 2001 but had too much 40K in it, with units that look like Orks vs Necrons and elites that look like Space Marines with flags and plasma pistol commanders. I don't think that's a problem for most westgamers
So those are the bad parts.
Everything else is better than Alpha Centurii.
