New decade, new WestGamer!
Welcome to the brand new "Mk 3" WestGamer forums! Did you know WestGamer turned 11 years old this month? Time flies!
Observant forum members will no doubt have noticed a bit of work going on over the last couple of months (apologies for the few disruptions which inevitably resulted) to implement some much needed updates to our site. Well, I'm pleased to announce that the bulk of this work is now complete and it's time to unveil the new look WestGamer to you all!
As of today, WestGamer will seeing a new change in direction. The original concept of WestGamer when I launched the site over a decade ago was for a purely Games Workshop based WA hobby forum. The site has grown a lot since this time (as has the WA hobby scene), incorporating a huge range of other miniature gaming systems as well as content supporting a huge range of other types of gaming - board, card and video gaming to name a few. We've run loads of quality events, worked with local organisers, stores and clubs, and generally provided a great place for gamers in WA to interact and share the hobbies they love.
As time and technology advances, more and more gaming media has become available online and social media is providing an excellent framework for gamers to stay in touch and share content rather than just relying on the older style forum formats alone. WestGamer has always been about community at its heart - so rather than be anchored solely to a less flexible format of interaction, we are going to be moving the community into the active social media space that a lot of gaming around the world now occupies as well. The goal of this is to benefit from the increased audience and technologies available on platforms like Facebook, but also to create a better user experience for WestGamer members who are active on these platforms as well.
To that end, WestGamer is now on Facebook!
Please join the group and invite any other gamers you know to become part of the community. The group will provide an ongoing discussion space for people in WA engaged in any and all areas of gaming, so make use of it to share your hobby in the same way you would on the main site. Facebook groups of course allow for the posting of other kinds of media content (videos, images, etc), sharing content from other pages and groups, as well as the scheduling and posting of events. Forum membership is not a requirement to become part of the WestGamer Facebook group.
On the web forum side, in addition to the obvious visual differences from the old forums, the new WestGamer.com has been steamlined. The old "portal style" landing page has been removed and over the coming week, the forum structure will undergo a rework to reduce clutter and improve ease of navigation. There have been some much needed security upgrades added to the site, as well as additional user interface options and a great platform for further plug-ins and additions. In line with the social media focus mentioned above, there are also a few nifty new features you may enjoy:
Log in to WestGamer via your social media account
When you log into the forum here, you will now also have the option of using your Facebook account to do so for increased convenience. Functionality to do this via Google & Twitter accounts will be added over the next week as well. Please note that these logins are email based - so make sure the email you use here on WestGamer matches the addresses used for your other social media accounts, otherwise you'll be prompted to start a new account here rather than logging into an existing one.
New WestGamer user registrations via social media accounts
As above, new users registering on the forum will now also have the option of using a Facebook account to do so. (Google & Twitter coming soon)
Share your posts via social media
At the bottom right hand corner of every forum post, you'll now see nifty new controls allowing you to share that post to your account on Twitter or Facebook! So if you want to get a message out there to the WestGamer community, try posting it here first and then sharing it to the Facebook group so that people can track replies in either location.
Finally, as with any mass forum upgrade / conversion as we've just undergone - there are bound to be the odd bug or two that we need to work through to bring everything up to date. In the meantime - please keep your eye out for anything that looks out of place. If you spot a bug or problem of some sort (or for any general questions relating to the upgrade), please don't hesitate to PM me or drop me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
Thanks for being a part of the WestGamer community - and I hope you enjoy the new site & group!
